ENERGY

REMEMBER: ENERGY/ELECTRICITY TEST on Monday/Tuesday Dec. 13/14th

Be sure to review these 4 main ideas:

  • Forces: examples, balanced vs. unbalanced.

  • Energy: Potential vs. Kinetic; Forms of Energy (heat, light, sound); Energy Transfers (heat to light, chemical to motion, etc.);  Energy Resources including renewable and non-renewable resources.

  • Electricity: Circuit types and how circuits work; how electricity is generated; electricity safety.

  • Technology: How our lives are impacted by new inventions in the world of physics.

Here are some test review websites to check out:

Homework answers are posted below!

Standards:

Energy / Electricity

Identify different forms of energy and how energy is transformed between forms: Heat, light, sound, mechanical, nuclear, chemical, elastic, electrical
Use the law of conservation of energy to distinguish between potential and kinetic energy.
Identify and explain series and parallel circuits
Describe how electricity  is generated
Describe visible light (wavelengths of visible light)
Evaluate advantages and disadvantage of renewable and nonrenewable resources.

                              Electricity Vocabulary!

Electricity: the flow of electrons. Electrons are part of the atom.

Charge: a build up of electrons.

Conductor: material that electricity goes through.

Insulator: material that stops the flow of electricity.

Circuit: a path for electricity to follow.

Series Circuit: a (single) path for electrons to flow in.

Parallel Circuit: two or more paths for electrons to flow in. (like 2 l’s in parallel)

Power: using electricity for a reason.

Kilowatt: a measurement of power or electricity. (unit)

Electricity Units:  Amps (I), Watts (P), Volts (V)  P= V x I

Test Review Homework Answers:

Energy Review Side:

  1. False, “Kinetic”
  2. False,  “potential”
  3. True
  4. False, “Potential”
  5. True
  6. False, “different: higher book has more”
  7. False, “thermal”
  8. True
  9. B
  10. B
  11. C

Electricity Review Side:

  1. Circuit
  2. Insulator; conductor
  3. Parallel; has one path for electrons to follow; parallel; has two or more paths for electrons to follow
  4. (P = V * I) Power = 1560 watts
  5.  (V = P/I)   Voltage = 120 volts
  6. Any 3: turbine spins to move water; wall supports mass of water; intake towers move water from late to river; wire move electricity through them; generator move to produce electricity
  7. A) a, b c, d;      B) A, B, C, E, F;  (D has two negatives next to one another)   c) None, they are all direct current. (Alternating current is in wall outlets.)
